10 Ways To Soothe A Fussy Baby

tylercry1

Its been over a month now since the arrival of baby #2…and yes, while Lil T is all sorts of adorable and smells great, he is a one grumpy baby, sometimes I think he hates that I am his mommy and that’s why he cries often…one night he cried for five hours straight…yes non-stop.  What I’ve learned thus far as a mom is patience and boy oh boy, Lil T really pushes my limits.  Nothing seemed to have calmed him that night and that alone was frustrating, annoying and draining, until I became creative.

And that’s why most of us will try just about anything to calm down our fussy babies, even if for a moment it will calm them down.

Making a vacuum-humming like sound as I like to refer to it as the “Human Vacuum” seem to be working (at least for now). You leaned into the baby ears and hum deeply into his ears, but in distinct rhythm.

“hmm hmm hmm, hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm, hmmmmmmm, hmmmmmm”

Gotta hear it for yourself to truly understand. Trust me.

So, I asked my other mom friends (the real experts) for some advice on how to soothe a fussy baby and here’s what they said.

  • “My son loves the sound of the car engine, so when he couldn’t soothe himself and become irritable, I would put him in his car seat, head to the car and start the engine.  Yes, I would find myself putting more gas in the car, but I had my sanity. My son stopped crying, and that was the goal!” — Michelle
  • “I would put my Ipad on and blast broadway show tunes from the speakers.  It worked every time.” — Nancy
  • “Having my daughter lie down in the vibrating rocker, worked every time and I never left home without it.” — Tina
  • “Hair dryer or the oven vent fan. Worked like a charm.” — Kelly
  • “I carried my son in the Baby Bjorn…my back hurt, but I had a sleeping baby.”  — Tracey
  • “With my 1st she had very bad colic and my husband would have to put her stomach down on his inner arm laying longways and rock her. It sounds strange but I think the pressure on her belly made her feel better. Also I would rotate her legs and push them gently to her belly when she was on her back and it would help her with gassiness.” — Sherley
  • “I have a 3-month old little and I’ve noticed that he cries when he thinks he’s alone. In this case, I found that picking him up and talking to him soothes him quickest. Once he knows he’s not alone, he calms right down and starts smiling. Babies just like the sound of people talking. My little boy has even started trying to copy the way my mouth moves and started trying to make the different sounds he heard me making.” — Erica
  • “Walking around with my son helped..the constant motion helped settle him down and made him feel safe.”  — Hillary
  • “Rocked out to old school Hip Hop”  — Edna
  • “I would turn off all the lights and sing to her.” — Louise

When mine was a month old a nurse at his doctor’s office started swinging him in his car seat and he fell instantly asleep. He’s eight-months-old now and less cranky but it worked like a charm 100% of the time!

I would rub my babies tummy or back. It usually worked like a chair. And God bless those swings. Couldn’t live without it. Andrea @ be-quoted.com. Please stop by to enter in our first KIDS Giveaway!
