Fashionable Fridays: 10 Things Carrie Bradshaw Taught Me (Yes, Really!)

To know me is to know that I love watching Sex and the City and most of all love watching everything Carrie Bradshaw; from watching her love life unfold, fashion hits and misses to listening in on her inner thoughts.

Like many women, Sex and the City has been a part of our lives and for this FASHIONABLE FRIDAY, I dedicate it to Carrie Bradshaw.  Here’s a list of  things I’ve learned from her throughout the years.  Read on and you’ll agree.

1. Have FUN with Fashion. Who cares what’s trendy this season, know what looks good on your body.  Sorry Ladies, but Spandex aren’t for everybody.

2. Own ONE good pair of shoes.  Shoes are an investment.  Good doesn’t have to mean expensive.  But invest in good shoes, ones you can wear over and over, and that you love, that will treat you & your body great.

3. Fashion CAN be affordable.  I love that Carrie can combine a simple tee, a jacket and accessorize it with pearls and heels. Yes, even Carrie was affordable in her attires, remember with her male BFF, Stanford reminded her that she use to wear Candies.  See, Carrie knows great fashion find when she sees one.

4.  Love what you do. Carrie wrote about relationships in her column.  I write about motherhood and because of my love for fashion and pop culture I write about that too, which is why you and I are friends.  If you are a mommy blogger, continue to write about what you love…we can all relate.

5. Confidence is Key. Ok, so not everything in Carrie’s wardrobe might have been winners, but despite the unwearable, Carrie always knows how to strut her stuff, she exudes an air of confidence making us not think twice on how crazy she might look.

6. LOVE beyond yourself. Personally my favorite Carrie quote is “I am someone who is looking for love. Real love. Ridiculous, Inconvenient, Consuming, Can’t live without each other Love.”

7. You DON’T have to to change your style because you have kids. We’ve seen this foursome go through it all, from relationships to break-ups, marriages & divorces, childbirth, aging, and more.  You are who you are– and that shouldn’t be sacrificed because an element in your life has changed.

8. Follow your instincts. Case and point Charlotte and Dr. Trey MacDougal (her first husband).  Charlotte had believed that her dreams had come true when she was swept off her feet by her knight and shining armour so despite some major red flags — a mediocre marriage proposal, a bitch of a mother-in-law, and a sexless honeymoon — Charlotte was determined to make the relationship work. Although she gave it her all, their union still failed. Never ignore warning signs that tells you that your relationship is failing.

9. Have an open mind. Not only does this ring true to fashion, but to people. Let’s keep an open mind and embrace each other differences.  Carrie may not have liked Samantha’s bed-hopes or Miranda’s negativity, but the love she had for her friends were unconditional.  Ladies let’s not forget that.  Female friendship usually has as expiration date (1 year, 2 year or 6 months), let’s try to change that…how come men can have long lasting friendships and we can’t?

10.  It’s OK to be childlike and not childish.  What I love about being a mother is seeing new things from my son’s eyes. I am the first one on the floor getting ready to play with my son.  Its moment like those that he and I will remember forever.

Craving more Carrie Bradshaw? pick up a copy of  Summer and the City by Candace Bushnell. Its the second prequel to Sex and the City. ..thought you knew Carrie, then think again.
